ABSTRACT

Addiction to social networks increases the chances of partner infidelity. This research aimed to determine the relationship between unfaithful behavior and addiction to social networks in adults from the commercial areas of Tarapoto, Lamas, San José de Sisa, Moyobamba, and Naranjos, in the Peruvian Amazon region, during the first four-month period of 2021. Thus, a study with a non-experimental design and correlational research type was developed in a sample of 318 individuals between 20 and 40 years old. The Multidimensional Infidelity Inventory and the Social Networks Addiction Questionnaire were applied. 62.3% of the participants were male, 57.5% were between 30 and 59 years old, 66.7% lived with their partners without marria-ge, and 51.6% were in the second stage of the couple relationship. There were significant diffe-rences between men and women regarding unfaithful behavior (U=6387,500; p<0.000). In this context, a predominance of the medium level of addiction to social networks in the participants and the low level in the dimensions of infidelity behavior were observed, establishing a statisti-cally significant correlation between both variables.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to analyze the factors associated with inconsistent condom use among men who have sex with men (MSM) and their commercial sexual partners in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study with adult MSM who were recruited via respondent-driven sampling (RDS) in 12 Brazilian capitals in 2016. MSM answered a sociobehavioral questionnaire which included questions on their sexual behavior. The inconsistent use of condoms with their clientele was measured via insertive and receptive anal sex in the six months prior to our research and in their last sexual intercourse. The association between independent variables and the inconsistent use of condoms was measured via a Poisson regression model with robust variance and estimation of adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR). Data from 461 MSM were analyzed. We found a 26% prevalence of inconsistent condom use with their clientele (95%CI: 19.0-34.3, n = 123). Belonging to the lowest economic classes (D/E), having medium or low knowledge about HIV, having practiced insertive and receptive anal sex, and having never tested for HIV throughout their lives were associated with inconsistent use of condoms with their clientele. The variables associated with inconsistent use indicated that commercial sex is practiced in a context of greater vulnerability to HIV infection, referring to the need for biomedical and behavioral interventions which focus on access to and use of prevention strategies together with public policies to reduce socioeconomic inequalities among MSM who practice commercial sexual.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The objective was to understand the aspects involved in the communication of their own clinical condition to their partners by young women born with HIV. This is qualitative research, developed in a Specialized HIV Care Service in the southern region of Brazil with ten young people who were born with HIV, using the individual interview, from June 2017 to March 2018. An anchored psychosocial analysis was used within the Framework of Vulnerability and Human Rights. Two groups emerged: the first composed of young women who chose to communicate with their partners at the beginning of affective relationships; and the second, with the young women who postponed such communication. All of them experienced apprehensions and fears regarding the partner's reaction, thought about or adopted some strategies for communication, and reported situations of lesser involvement in HIV prevention behaviors by couples/partners. Care practices that dialogue with young women about the unique difficulties in their intersubjective contexts, crossed by structural social issues, are essential in order to support them in communicating their HIV status to their partners in as soon as possible, in adopting preventive strategies, and in accessing resources that protect their and their partners' sexual and reproductive health.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis is recognized as the causative agent of one of the most common and curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In women, it can be a trigger for pelvic inflammatory disease, a risk factor for infertility or acquisition of other STIs. AIM: To determine CT in women with vaginitis and associate it with sociodemographic, sexual, clinical, and vaginal microbiota factors. Methods: 121 female volunteers > 18 years of age, with a clinical diagnosis of vaginitis and abnormal vaginal discharge, attending in primary health care services (PHC) in Temuco-Chile were recluted. A vaginal discharge sample was taken, determining C. trachomatis by polymerase chain reaction and vaginal microbiota by Gram stain. Clinical, sociodemographic and sexual data were collected by survey. RESULTS: Age range was 18-61 years. The frequency of C. trachomatis was 14.9%. C. trachomatis was associated with a higher number of sexual partners in the last 5 years (p = 0.001), oral plus anal sex (p = 0.055) and sex toys (p = 0.027); there was a non-significant association with bacterial vaginosis 31.2% (p = 0.091) and initiation of sexual activity < 18 years 20.6% (p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS: It would be beneficial to incorporate in the gynecological semiology of the women attended in PHC services, the factors found to favor C. trachomatis infection, as this could help the management of this STI.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Syphilis and HIV infections are sexually transmitted infections whose diagnosis and treatment contribute toward preventing congenital transmission. Objective: To report a case of three sexually transmitted infections detected in a male partner during Couple Consultation and syphilis in the female partner during prenatal care. Case report: A 34-year-old black female G2P1 pregnant woman was referred to an outpatient clinic of sexually transmitted infections in Vitória, Brazil, reporting a 30-day evolution of painless papular lesions in the external genitalia, suggestive of condylomata lata. Nontreponemal tests were positive for syphilis and negative for HIV. The husband reported unprotected receptive anal intercourse and possessed anal condylomatous lesions and perianal condylomata lata. He was positive for both HIV and syphilis. Histopathological findings showed low-grade HPV lesions and the PCR test found 16, 39, and 53 HPV subtypes. Treatment with benzathine penicillin G was successful for both partners. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for Couple Consultation during pregnancy to identify and treat possible sexually transmitted infections.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective To compare the effectiveness of verbal communication and communication by card in getting sexual partners of people with sexually transmitted infections to attend a health service and the factors associated with the success of these types of communication. Method Clinical, controlled, and randomized study, whose intervention was offering a reporting card for index patients to hand to their sexual partners. Results The sample was 189 index patients, 94 of whom were in the control group, and verbally invited their sexual partners to receive care, and 95 were allocated to the intervention group, and took their partner's reporting card to their partners as a way to invite them to receive care. The percentage of partners invited by card who came to the service was 52.6%, in contrast with 43.6% among partners who were invited verbally, but no significant statistical difference was found (p=0.215). The factors associated with failure to convince partners to come to the service were: not living with the partner (p=0.0001); not having a steady partner (p=0.0001); having casual partners (p=0.028); and using condoms with a steady partner (p=0.045). The infection type did not influence the studied partners' visits to the service. Conclusion Given the failure to achieve effectiveness when applying the reporting by card, the authors recommend another card model containing information for partners to be used in combination with other methods. ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the characteristics of sexual partners and the influence of having multiple sexual partners on substance use among young male students man who have sex with men (MSM) in China, and to provide scientific basis for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS among young MSM students.@*Methods@#A mixed recruitment method of snowball sampling and respondent driven sampling was used to recruit young MSM students in Beijing and Tianjin, and a questionnaire survey was conducted among 220 participants from November to December 2019. Chi-square test and generalized linear model multi-factor Logistic regression were used to analyze the influencing factors of substance use before sexual behavior.@*Results@#The average age of them was (22.39±2.57) years old, 84.5% of them were students, the average age of first sexual behavior was (18.83±2.45) years old, 44.1% of them had two or more sexual partners (including fixed sexual partners, temporary sexual partners and commercial sexual partners), 22.7% had more than one male fixed partner. After adjusting for age and education, having multiple sexual partners was risk factor for drinking alcohol before sex (aOR=2.97) or substance abuse (aOR=2.39). Having male temporary sexual partner was an risk factor in substance use before sexual behavior(OR=4.10).@*Conclusion@#The characteristics of sexual partners among young MSM students are complex, and the proportion of multiple sexual partners is high. Having fixed single sexual partner can reduce the risk of substance use before sexual behavior. AIDS prevention education for young MSM students should be further strengthened.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Background: Adolescents who engage in sexual activity in a non-romantic relationship may develop patterns of sexual activity that lead to negative health outcomes such as unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and increased exposure to multiple sexual partners. Objective: To analyze the association between sexual initiation in the context of non-romantic relationship and risk behaviors in sexual and reproductive health in adolescents. Method: Cross-sectional and analytical study in a teenage population of both sexes. We compared adolescents who initiated sexual activity in a context of romantic relationships and those who did it in a non-romantic context. The association between age at sexual initiation, number of sexual partners, use of contraceptive method and selected personal and family variables was analyzed. Results: 3,565 adolescents who had initiated sexual intercourse were interviewed. The personal and family variables associated with sexual initiation in a non-romantic context are: having a basic schooling, a lower grade point average and repeating background, and academic projects finishing secondary or high school, bad family relationships, and family dysfunction. The risk behaviors in sexual health in adolescents of both sexes who initiated sexual activity in a context of non-romantic relationship were: sexual debut earlier, no use of contraceptive methods and greater number of sexual partners. Conclusion: The beginning of sexual activity in a non-romantic context exposes adolescents to risk behaviors in their sexual and reproductive health.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the situation and influencing factors related to the promotion of HIV testing program among sex partners in newly diagnosed HIV positive MSM in Zhejiang province during 2015 to 2017.@*Methods@#Newly diagnosed HIV positive MSM in Zhejiang province from 2015 to 2017 were collected and provided four rounds of testing services to their sexual partners so as to study the consequences. Chi-square test was conducted to compare the difference between groups while multivariate logistic regression was conducted to analyze the related influencing factors.@*Results@#A total of 6 269 HIV positive MSM were provided with four rounds of testing services to their sexual partners. 1 925 HIV positive MSM (30.7%, 1 925/6 269) were successfully persuaded in mobilizing their sexual partners to participate in the HIV testing services. However, 4 344 HIV positive MSM (69.3%, 4 344/6 269) refused to do so. A total of 2 126 sexual partners received HIV testing and the HIV positive rates of those sexual partners appeared as 13.0% (277/2 126, 95%CI:11.6%-14.5%) and 78.7% (218/277, 95%CI: 73.8%-83.6%). Results from the multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that factors as: HIV positive MSM that participated in the study in 2016 (compared with participated in the study in 2015, OR=1.581, 95%CI: 1.370-1.823), in 2017 (compared with participated in the study in 2015, OR=1.394, 95%CI: 1.208-1.608), living in the reporting city (compared with lived outside the reporting city, OR=1.518, 95%CI: 1.320-1.745), being married (compared with unmarried/divorced/widowed, OR=4.449, 95%CI: 3.837-5.160), having education level of junior high school or below (compared with education level of senior high school or above, OR=1.203, 95%CI: 1.058-1.367), numbers of homosexual partners >5, (compared with numbers of homosexual partner from past between 1-5, OR=1.236, 95%CI: 1.095-1.395), active detection (compared with passive detection, OR=1.340, 95%CI: 1.193-1.506) were more likely to relate to the successful persuasion on their sexual partners to receive the HIV testing. There was no statistical difference noticed between HIV-infected homosexual partners and their corresponding HIV positive MSM, in terms of socio-demographic situations.@*Conclusions@#HIV positive MSM should promote their sexual partners to receive HIV testing. This seemed an important role in expanding the HIV testing in this population. However, the program needs to be further improved and included in daily work, focusing on those partners with similar social and demographic characteristics with those infected MSM.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the association between sexual sensation seeking (SSS) and sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Guangzhou. Methods MSM aged 18 and over were recruited in Zhitong Charity from June 2017 to April 2018. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors and SSS were collected using an electronic questionnaire. Logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between SSS and sexual risk behaviors. Results A total of 500 MSM were included in the current study. The mean age of the participants was (27.77±5.96) years old. The multiple logistic regression analyses showed that MSM with high SSS scores were more likely to engage in multiple sexual partners (OR=2.05, 95% CI: 1.40-2.30,P<0.001), one-night stand (OR=2.11, 95% CI: 1.44-3.09,P<0.001), and unprotected anal intercourse (OR=1.70, 95% CI: 1.16-2.50,P=0.007) than those with low SSS scores. Conclusions High SSS is associated with an increased risk of sexual risk behavior among MSM in Guangzhou. The behavior intervention strategy should be tailored for MSM with high SSS to improve the effectiveness to reduce sexual risk behaviors.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective To identify if the selection of mixed sexual partners and the existence of concurrent partners are predictors of condom use in indigenous migrant agricultural workers from Colima, Mexico. Methods Analytical cross-sectional study using an egocentric sexual network approach. Community interviewers applied a structured questionnaire to 192 indigenous migrant workers in a sugarcane agro-industrial context. Data were analyzed with binary logistic regression; odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI 95%) were estimated. Results In the logistic regression model, adjusted odds (OR; 95% CI) of steady condom use were lower within partnerships of the same indigenous ethnicity compared to other partnerships (0.30; 0.17-0.53), partnerships that were concurrent to other partnerships (0.27; 0.15-0.50), and partnerships that used illegal drugs during sex to other partnerships (0.23; 0.11-0.49). Those variables were actually associated with increased risk of unprotected sex (occasionally or never using condoms), and therefore exposures were unprotected. Conclusion Sexual partners of the same ethnicity, concurrent partnerships and partnerships that use illegal drugs favor the low frequency of constant condom use and, in turn, the vulnerability to STIs and HIV transmission in indigenous migrant agricultural workers.(AU)

ABSTRACT

To comprehend the serodiscordance and individual HIV vulnerability in being-with-another serodiscordant relationships. A qualitative study anchored in the Hermeneutic Phenomenology of Martin Heidegger. Eight seropositive patients and their serodiscordant partners participated in the study, totalizing 16 participants. The interview was the instrument used to obtain narratives experienced by the couples. The phenomenological concepts of "being-with" and "being-in-the-world", described by Heidegger allowed the senses and meanings related to the serodiscordance phenomenon to be evident in detail. The social constructions of masculinity, the reduced ability of the couple in negotiating safe sex practice, the use of antiretroviral therapy as an HIV protection factor added to cultural influences were found as the main situations of the individual vulnerability of the serodiscordant existence. The comprehension of the existential meaning of being-couple-serodiscordant, according to the ontologic structure "being-one-with-another" instigate changes in the nurse praxis, giving the opportunity to distinctive and integral attention to the serodiscordant couple.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that one of the factors associated with the postponement of sexual activity is membership or affiliation to Judeo-Christian religions, with strict codes of behavior. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between religiosity and sexual behaviors in adolescents. METHOD: Analytical cross-sectional study conducted in a population of adolescents. Were compared catholic, evangelical and without religion. Association between affiliation and assistance religious services and age sexual initiation, condom use and number of sexual partners were analyzed. RESULTS: In total, 5.231 adolescents (median age 16 years, 91.6% female, 97.3% students,), were interviewed. Adolescents who declare to be evangelicals cease to attend religious services in greater proportion than Catholic adolescents when initiating sexual activity. Religious affiliation, whether Catholic or evangelical, delay the onset of sexual activity and decreases the risk of having more than one sexual partner, compared with those without religion, but religious affiliation, whether Catholic or evangelical, increases the risk of non-use of condoms, compared to those without religion. CONCLUSION: Religious affiliation influences sexual behaviors in adolescents, decreasing the risk in the age of sexual debut and in the number of sexual partners but increasing the risk in the non-use of the condom but does not influence the pill use.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To investigate the factors associated with syphilis/HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) maintaining a single sexual partner in Shenzhen.@*Methods@#Respondent driven sampling and snowball sampling method were used to recruit MSM receiving voluntary counseling and testing in Shenzhen Rainbow clinic from 2011 to 2016. Inclusion criteria: aged 18 years and above; reported having one or more anal sexual partners in the recent 6 months. A total of 3 109 men who have sex with men (MSM) were involved in the study. Questionnaire-based interviews were conducted on a one-on-one basis. Data were collected including socio-demographic information, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing history, history of blood donation and drug abuse in the recent two years, self-identified sexual orientation, role in homosexual behavior, ever being money boys (MB) and clients of MB, female sexual partners in the recent 6 months. 5 ml blood samples were taken after questionnaires. Syphilis was screened using toluidine red unheated serum test for the antibody of treponema pallidum and then confirmed by treponema pallidum particle assay. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used for screening HIV and western blot was used to confirm the HIV screening results. The difference of condom use among MSM between female sexual partners and male sexual partners were compared. Multivariate unconditional stepwise logistic regression model was used to analyze factors associated with syphilis infection and HIV positive among MSM.@*Results@#A total of 3 109 eligible participants with mean (SD) age of 31.49 (8.64) years were enrolled in this study. Among them, 565 cases were infected with syphilis (18.17%), 330 cases were infected with HIV (10.61%), and 165 cases (5.31%) were syphilis co-infected with HIV. 791 (25.44%) reported maintaining a single sexual partners in the recent 6 months. Compared to MSM with multiple sexual partners, the prevalence of syphilis and HIV infection among MSM with a single sexual partner were lower, and the OR (95%CI) were 0.64 (0.51-0.81) and 0.66 (0.49-0.90), respectively.@*Conclusion@#The proportion of fixed single sexual partner was much lower among MSM in Shenzhen. Maintaining a single sexual partners can reduce the risk of syphilis/HIV infection among MSM.
